VeriChip is a unique 10 digit I.D. system that allows vital information to be stored on a very small micro-chip that can then be injected underneath the subcutaneous fat on one's body.
Baja Club in Barcelona, Spain is the first commercial application of the technology - that is sure to find its self in many consumer markets in the future. The chip is about the size of a grain of rice, and makes you wonder if they will eventually inject it in the forehead or under the backs of peoples hands. (wink wink, nod nod)
Reminds me of what Shadow wrote a few months ago:
You swipe into a mall with your personal card...kinda like a library card.
You have this b/c you've shopped here before/security/got a discount having the
card/you name the reason.
As you walk by each store the scanner at the front of the store locates your
card either IR or Magnetically and IDs you
Along with your ID comes the last few purchases/a quick credit rating/and your
preset likes & dislikes read the article
Take it another step - not only will the different stores know what you want... you might not even have to wait in line anymore. So you could, in theory walk into your local grocery store, get what you need, then just walk out. You will be charged for them without ever having to stop because of the Access Control system that identitfied you as you walked in, scanned the product as you walked past then sensors, then finally debted your account for the purchases.
For now though, you'll have to go Spain and get approval from the owner to get chipped, then you can drink to your hearts content without ever breaking your pocket book or wallet out.
Creepy? Cool?
Great site, well done. I enjoy being here and i´ll come back soon. You do a great job. Many greetings.

I concur with Shadow...make the idea available to the beer lovers and Wal-Mart shoppers and people would jump on it for convience...however, I personally think it is spooky - for several reasons...not that i have all the answers but this system would only reduce people into a number...it's already, kinda freaky enough that everyone in the US is more identified with their social security number than their name...this satan-like grain of rice with all your personal digits, income, birth-rate, and preferences might as well take away all our identity as well...before you know it, people wouldn't even name their children anymore - let the chip in their fat talk for them

Anything for VIP status...if Wal-Mart could come up with something like that for their self-checkout line, that would be something!

Leave it to a bar to figure out the quick way to get your drink to you!
As I write this, (from Israel) the guard at the entrance of my hotel would love one of those scanners. It would at least ID me quickly as a low terrorist threat and help him do the body cavity search (he did not have the delicate fingers of my last doctor and had me singing 'Moon River' aka Chevy Chase) only on those who the chip identified as a potential threat or were sporting one of those fashionable bomb-vests for their evening out.
As for the creepy or cool part...we (the US) have major debates on this tightrope between personal liberties and communal safety. I contend your average American will not voluntarily sacrifice his freedom in the name of security...but he would think twice if a little chip meant getting a beer faster at his local watering hole.
