The band Widespread Panic must have some FANATICAL followers. I was in a cab today in Chicago, IL and saw this sticker placed right below the screen in the back of the vehicle. Wait...did I just say, "the screen in the back??" Yeah, I think I did.
Anyway, right below that was the advertisement for traindays.com. A website dedicated to a film about the fans that followed the band throughout Europe last summer. A non-commissioned ad I might mention. I told the gentleman propelling me toward my destination about the sticker and he cursed me. I told him I DIDN'T DO IT!! It mattered not, I was the left hand in his culture now.
This is the new Dead. All tour and no flash.
Hard to know what to make of these things...The Dead embodied a counter-cultural (well, I guess it wasn't so "counter" when they first started...) ethos that basically celebrated removing yourself from the "real" world for at least a while. I'm not familiar with Panic's lyrics or their following. Who are they mad at? What's their biggest beef with society? What are they (implicitly) calling their fans to? questions...

Widespread Panic is one of those bands that kinda transcends generations...although it seems that the "young" kids are REALLY looking for something to hold on to nowadays.

It feels weird being 25 and wondering "What are those younger kids listening to?" I can't imagine listening to the same band for 19 years, but I imagine I'll be in the same boat in about 10 years or so ... wondering, "What are those 25-year-olds listening to?"
